About Mel and Carol:
Arizona brings out the Southwest visions that Mel enjoys creating on canvas. His passion in using acrylic paints gives him the ability to produce a rich color depth and texture. Backgrounds are important to Mel; many of his paintings have a non-distracting background to focus on the subject matter which he wants to emphasize. Acrylics allow him to focus on details such as Native American baskets and pottery which is his passion. Mel’s paintings replicate designs from actual historic pottery ranging from early American to modern aesthetics.
Mel also enjoys painting many other subject matters such as landscape, old vehicles and southwest lifestyle.
Carol works with a variety of leathers and fiber for designing her artwork but her passion is sculpted free-form leather vessels. Leather inspires her since it offers many possibilities with the different textures and finishes. Her vision of how the leather wants its history and story represented is reflected and carried forward in her artwork making each piece a one-of-a-kind. She hand selects each vegetable tanned leather hide embracing all the holes, markings and texture knowing the original fibers of the hide add character. This leather has the longevity and beauty only an artisan-created product can sustain.
Her greatest joy comes from seeing the finished pieces since no two leather hides are exactly alike because each has a different history.
Mel & Carol Brook are both Juried Artists of Sonoran Arts League.
