This is the second session of two-part series: Tools Used to Assess Health

Are you tired of being told what health care you need?  Are you ready to learn how to navigate our crazy system of healthcare? Do you need to understand what procedures are required, or, just recommended? Do you want to learn how to become a partner in your health care?

Guidance and suggestion to these topics will be covered in this two-part consumer health lecture series.

Today, being a health consumer encompasses having knowledge beyond basic medical care and health practices. Patients need to do their homework and become a well-informed consumer about how our body and healthcare system works.

Tools to Help You Navigate

The series is offered around your open enrollment period to help you make better healthcare choices.

This consumer health lecture series will provide tools for you to efficiently navigate the healthcare system. We will cover many topics including basic health insurance, basic medical terminology and basic health care practices.  We will also provide tips on how to effectively communicate with health care professionals, how to use the electronic medical systems, (EPIC), and how to understand your patient rights and responsibilities.

Topics include:

  • Identifying alternative treatments such as Ayurvedic medicine, traditional Chinese medicine, naturopathy, homeopathic medicine, chiropractic medicine, massage, reflexology, and herbals or botanicals, to decide if these can be effective for your health issues
  • Examining consumer rights, responsibilities, and resources with regard to the American health care system, health fraud, and health insurance.
  • Examining consumer health products and learning to recognize fraud versus fact
  • Examining and evaluating health information
  • Planning behavior changes to improve health
  • Understanding the electronic record system and keeping your own health records
  • Discussing consumer protection, HIPPA and malpractice
