Building an Impact: Jim & Lillian Reed’s contributions from the ground up

Jim and Lillian Reed have, in a literal sense, been building an impact in the community ever since the concept of a multi-generational community center began to take shape on blueprints in the early 2000s.

Jim was instrumental in the architectural development, feasibility plans, fundraising, and construction of our three-building campus—The Holland Center, YMCA, and Paradise Valley Community College— and they have both been donors since breaking ground on the buildings in 2008.

Their contributions have enabled The Holland Center to exist and build upon our mission for over 20 years now.

“We couldn’t do what we do without the Reeds,” said Jennifer Rosvall, Executive Director of The Holland Center. “They have believed in our mission since day one, and their contributions have made a meaningful difference in the lives of those we serve. We are so thankful for their kindness and generosity.”

Jim and Lillian both grew up in Iowa, and met during college. They have been married for 70 years and have three children and five grandchildren. Prior to retirement, Jim was involved in corporate life in the Chicago and New York City areas. Lillian volunteered with several organizations mostly in health care. They said they both feel that giving back is an important factor of life. So when they moved to Arizona after retirement, Lillian continued volunteering in hospital work and Jim became interested in several non-profit organizations.

One of those organizations was the Foothills Community Foundation (which was renamed The Holland Center in 2020). At the time, the Foundation had an opportunity to build a facility that would be used by families and individuals of all ages. And that’s when Jim stepped up in a significant way to help see the construction project to completion.

In a 2019 interview, Jim said, “The buildings are important, but remember: they are simply a tool—a tool to enable us to deliver programs and services to the community that are needed.”

“This [The Holland Center] is a worthy place to donate time and money, as it continues to enrich life in our community,” said Lillian.

Jim and Lillian’s generosity made an impact with the donor behind our Twice as Nice match campaign who felt that their contributions were worthy of being recognized in a big way: As a tribute, the $50,000 raised through the campaign has been donated in their honor.

“It’s a joyful tribute on many levels,” said Jennifer Rosvall. “So deserving for a couple that has given so much to our cause.”
