Sharpen your strategy with our Defensive Play workshop, designed to help you use the Charleston to collect early information, read exposures, make safer discards, and know when to pivot from offense to defense. If you’re ready to elevate your game, this class is for you.
Players will benefit most from this class after developing a solid foundation in offensive play and hand-building strategies.
FORMAT: In-person classroom
INSTRUCTION METHOD: Hands-on
AGES: Adults 18+
EXPERIENCE LEVEL: Advanced Beginner – Intermediate
PREREQUISITES: Completion of beginner lessons and a solid working understanding of American Mah Jongg. Players should feel comfortable building hands and playing offensively before taking this defensive class.
WHAT TO BRING: Please bring your 2025 NMJL card (Bring Your Own Card). Mahjong sets and handouts will be provided. You’re welcome to bring a pen and paper for notes and a closed water bottle. To help keep our space clean and focused on play, we ask that snacks be enjoyed before or after class.

With a background in education, Katie makes Mahjong’s patterns and strategies easy to understand through approachable, engaging lessons. Her goal is to create a welcoming space where players of all experience levels can build confidence and enjoy the game through learning and social play. She is also a member of the Mahj Life Instructor Guild (current as of 2025).
