Why I Serve: Terry Crull

When Terry Crull retired in 2022 after a remarkable 50-year career as a corporate insurance broker, she wasn’t quite sure what life after work would look like. “It was a very intense job and I was so busy working that I didn’t have a clear plan for what to do in retirement,” Terry shared.

After moving from Phoenix to Cave Creek in 1998, Terry kept her head down in the corporate world for decades. But when she finally had the chance to explore new possibilities, The Holland Center quickly caught her eye. “I was impressed with the facility, the Jim Sherbert lecture series, the Prickly Pear Festival, and the variety of classes. And when I heard they have a need for volunteers, I thought it might be the perfect fit for me.”

Today, Terry brings her professional expertise, warm personality, and steady presence to The Holland Center every Wednesday morning at the front desk. From greeting visitors to answering phones, guiding guests through the website, and helping with volunteer software, she has found that her corporate background has made the transition to volunteer work feel seamless. “It feels like home because it is similar to going to a workstation like I did during my professional career. And I’m not skittish about computers or phones because of my experience in the corporate world. This really helped with the shock of the retirement transition. I feel like I still have a purpose and am contributing to something.”

For Terry, the most rewarding part of volunteering has been connecting with others. “I really enjoy talking with people on the phone and in person; they are so appreciative when you’re giving them answers, and I like getting to know people this way.”

She credits faith for guiding her to this new chapter. “I thank God for guiding me to this opportunity. In my corporate job, there was beginning to be a lot of turnover and quality was going down the drain; it was starting to affect my health. Now when I leave The Holland Center, I always feel good. It’s the high point of my week.”

Even during summer breaks, Terry finds herself eager to return. “During the slowest part of the summer, the front desk doesn’t need volunteers. So that’s when I took a vacation. But I honestly couldn’t wait to get back to work in August. I missed it!”

Her advice for anyone considering volunteering? “Absolutely do it. Find your niche and it will be rewarding beyond belief to find something that fits you. Beware of stressful situations though (remember, you’re not getting paid). So if it’s making you sad, pick something else. It’s up to you to make volunteering as fulfilling as possible. When it’s the right fit, it’s really special.”

At The Holland Center, Terry has found more than just a volunteer role—she’s found connection, purpose, and joy. And she reminds us all that sometimes the next chapter of life can be the most fulfilling one yet.
