Howard Fast’s historical fiction, Citizen Tom Paine, paints a vivid picture of the man and the place that gave birth to Common Sense. John Genette, Peter Strupp, and Phyllis Strupp offer a reading of excerpts from Fast’s novel, highlighting the personalities and the conflicts behind the little book that birthed a nation.
Philadelphia, 1776: As frustration with King George III simmers in the colonies, writer Tom Paine publishes Common Sense, arguing for independence from Britain.
His bold pamphlet ignites public opinion, inspires George Washington’s despondent army, and foreshadows the Declaration of Independence.
A brief Q&A will follow the performance.
