Take your Mah Jongg game to the next level! In this Defensive Play workshop, learn to use the Charleston to gather information, read exposures, make safer discards, and know when to shift from offense to defense. Best for players with a solid foundation in offensive play and hand-building who are ready to sharpen their strategy.

FORMAT: In-person classroom
INSTRUCTION METHOD: Hands-on
AGES: Adults 16+
EXPERIENCE LEVEL: Advanced Beginner – Intermediate
PREREQUISITES: Completion of beginner lessons and  a solid working understanding of American Mah Jongg. Players should feel comfortable building hands and playing offensively before taking this defensive class.
WHAT TO BRING: Please bring your 2026 NMJL card (Bring Your Own Card). Mahjong sets and handouts will be provided. You’re welcome to bring a pen and paper for notes and a closed water bottle. To help keep our space clean and focused on play, we ask that snacks be enjoyed before or after class.

INSTRUCTOR: Katie Petrine

With a background in education, Katie makes Mahjong’s patterns and strategies easy to understand through approachable through engaging lessons. Her goal is to create a welcoming space where players of all experience levels can build confidence and enjoy the game through learning and social play. She is also a current member of the Mahj Life Instructor Guild.
