Most Americans view their nation as a Democracy. The word Democracy comes from two ancient Greek words demos (meaning “people”) and kratos (meaning “rule” or “power”). In other words, rule by the populous or the majority. However, America’s Founding Fathers were fearful of majority rule devolving into what Thomas Jefferson called “mob rule”. They opted for a variation of a Democracy called Constitutional Republic.
We will examine how a Republic differs from a pure Democracy and compare to other governing alternatives throughout the world, including examining Socialism vs. Capitalism.
