Sports has been a major part of American social life for more than century.  It has evolved from local community events and county fairs to become a huge segment of the American ethos and the economy.  In recent decades it has changed from a focus on  armature competition “for the thrill of the game”, to being big business with compensation of participants becoming almost unimaginable.  We will examine why how sports have become such a major part of the American society, while attempting to project where this trend might lead.
