Learn the art of transforming soft wool fibers into a vibrant functional mitt for your kitchen – or to give as a gift. Whether you’re brand new to felting or an experienced maker, this class offers step-by-step guidance with room for experimentation and plenty of inspiration.
You will design your fiber art potholder using a variety of colorful wools from sheep, goats and alpacas. In addition, there will be a wide selection of embellishing fibers like sari silk waste, wool & silk yarn and others.
Using simple felting techniques we will be “wet felting.” We will overlap layers of wool, add soap and water, and then rub and roll the piece until it becomes fabric or “felted.” You will be guided through each step, combining different raw materials into a unique and gorgeous piece of finished functional art for the kitchen.
While wet felting, the natural fibers some of the dye may transfer to your clothing during class, so please wear clothing you wouldn’t mind being stained during the process. Once your piece is rinsed, it will no longer stain. Instructions on how to care and clean your mitt will be included. As an added benefit, you will leave this class with the knowledge of how to replicate this process at home.
Note: This workshop runs over the lunch hour, please bring a lunch and/or snacks; there will be multiple breaks during the class.
