Gettysburg and Vicksburg are two battles of the Civil War that occurred on the same weekend in 1863. Gettysburg was the bloodiest battle in American history with over 50,000 casualties, yet established the “high water mark” of the Confederacy and was the catalyst to Lincoln’s famous speech. But Vicksburg broke the back and spirit of the Confederacy, catapulting Ulysses S Grant to the leadership the US Army. We’ll examine the two conflicts and their impact on American history.
